Dear Friends and Supporters,

This month, Casa Collin was honored to host a moving art exhibit featuring the work of artist Yessenia Garnica Cortes and documentary photographer Roger Watts. The exhibition explored the themes of courage, perseverance, and the humanity of the migrant experience.

The event drew an enthusiastic and diverse crowd of around sixty attendees on opening night, including locals, foreigners based here in Oaxaca, as well as tourists. The exhibit continued for one week, allowing more visitors the chance to experience the work at their own pace.

On opening night, both artists were present to share insights about their creative process, while visitors enjoyed light refreshments as they mingled, viewed the art, and engaged in meaningful conversations with the artists.

Jane Papalote by Yessenia Garnica Cortes

Yessenia Garnica Cortes spoke movingly about the inspiration behind her tapestry book, a project that weaves personal and collective narratives directly into textile. She graciously acknowledged the collaborators who helped bring her vision to life. Her pieces stood as a testament to the resilience and beauty of storytelling through craft. Yessenia was kind enough to share with us a bit more about this work, her creative process, and the importance of sharing this work at Casa Collin, of which you can read in an interview here.

Transit, Transition, Transformation by Roger Watts

Roger Watts’ photography offered a quiet yet powerful lens into the lives of migrants, gently reminding viewers of the moral responsibility we all share to stand with the marginalized. His work sparked thoughtful reflection and conversation among guests throughout the evening.

As part of the evening’s events, both artists contributed to a community raffle: Roger donated a photograph, and Yessenia gifted a beautifully hand-embroidered tote bag.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended and helped make this exhibit a success, especially to the artists for their vision and passion and the Casa Collin volunteers, whose energy and dedication made everything possible.

We are grateful to be able to celebrate art, community, and stories that matter.

With gratitude,

The Casa Collin Team
