Collin A.C. Asistencia a Migrantes en Oaxaca is proud to invite you to our upcoming tapestry and photo exhibit highlighting the migrant experience. We are honored to have two artists share their work with our community whose creativity is witness to the narratives we strive to support daily and fosters greater empathy and understanding.

Join us at Casa Collin Sunday, June 15 from 5 to 7 pm for the inaugural opening. Artists will be present and refreshments will be served. Attendees of the inauguration will have the opportunity to win a signed exhibition print by Roger Watts or a hand embroidered tote bag by Yessenia Garnica Cortes.

Jane Papalote by Yessenia Garnica Cortes

Jane Papalote is the story of a young migrant girl. This exhibit is based on the original book entitled “Tony Papalote” by author Magdalena Clara Torielli. Told through boldness and fantasy, Jane Papalote revisits the theme of child migration through threads and embroidery.

The artist, Yessenia Garnica Cortes is originally from La Reforma Yautepec. Since 2019, she has actively participated in the studio-gallery “La Casa del Diablo”, located in Oaxaca City. In 2021, Yessenia developed the ‘Nihilita’ project, developing artworks, creating a language in embroidery through visual metaphors that materialize personal ideas and concepts. In 2023, she was invited to participate in the group exhibition “Migration”, which sparked the idea of creating a large format embroidered book.

Transit, Transition, Transformation by Roger Watts

A series of intimate documentary photographs that captures the lived experiences of ‘personas en movilidad’, highlighting the resilient spirit of the families and children that Casa Collin is privileged to serve.

Published throughout the world, Roger has photographed for the ACLU, NAACP, and social justice agencies. He contributes video memoirs of retired US military for the Library of Congress Veterans History Project, and is the photographer for Disability Rights International, investigating human rights violations as determined by the United Nations. He and his wife, Susan, live in Oaxaca.

We look forward to seeing you at the inauguration or during visiting hours throughout the week. Thank you for standing in solidarity with those on the move and for supporting the creatives who help share their stories.

Your support makes this work possible.

With gratitude,

The Casa Collin Team
